This website is a part of Dr. Hatem Bazian’s course on Islamophobia and Constructing Otherness at UC Berkeley. With it, we aim to analyze the intersections where mainstream feminism in the "West" has met with, or spoken over women who identify as Muslim, or are otherwise understood to be somehow related to Islam in the Western discourse. This includes a wide array of topics, and we have chosen to focus on three particular trends: 1. the misappropriation of Muslim women’s voices or lack thereof in Western media, 2. the veil as a site of women’s oppression vs. women’s liberty, and 3. how the veil has become a target in hate crime cases. These trends are important to understand because the current mainstream narrative has become increasingly hostile towards Muslim women.
